U.D.O.
U.D.O. is a German heavy metal band founded in Solingen by vocalist Udo Dirkschneider following his departure from Accept in 1987. The band was formed the same year, with Dirkschneider as the central and eponymous member. The current lineup includes vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, guitarists Dee Dammers and Alen Brentini, bassist Peter Baltes, who is also a former member of Accept, and drummer Sven Dirkschneider, the son of Udo Dirkschneider.
Following Dirkschneider’s departure from Accept in 1987, he formed U.D.O. The original lineup consisted of guitarists Mathias Dieth and Peter Szigeti, bassist Frank Rittel, and drummer Thomas Franke. The band released its debut album “Animal House” on 3 November 1987, which was entirely written by members of Accept. Shortly after, Szigeti, Rittel, and Franke left the group and were replaced by guitarist Andy Susemihl, bassist Thomas Smuszynski, and drummer Stefan Schwarzmann. The second album, “Mean Machine”, was released on 10 January 1989.
Susemihl later left the band, reducing U.D.O. to a four-piece. The third album, “Faceless World”, was released on 25 February 1990 and featured a more commercial sound compared to earlier releases, becoming the band’s most successful album up to that point. The fourth album, “Timebomb”, was released on 3 April 1991 and marked a heavier musical direction. In 1992, Dirkschneider placed U.D.O. on hiatus in order to reunite with Accept.
In 1996, Dirkschneider reactivated U.D.O. with a new lineup that included former Accept drummer Stefan Kaufmann, who switched to guitar, guitarist Jürgen Graf, bassist Fitty Wienhold (formerly of Bullet), and returning drummer Stefan Schwarzmann. The band recorded a cover of Judas Priest’s “Metal Gods” for the 1997 tribute album “A Tribute to Judas Priest: Legends of Metal”.
On 24 March 1997, U.D.O. released its fifth studio album “Solid”, which remained on the Rock Hard magazine reader charts for over a year. It was followed by “No Limits” on 20 April 1998, which included a cover of Supermax’s “Love Machine”. After touring for the album, Stefan Schwarzmann left the band and was replaced by drummer Lorenzo Milani.
The album “Holy” was released on 18 October 1999 and received critical acclaim, returning to a heavier guitar-driven style reminiscent of the Accept era. A world tour followed, including dates in the United States. The band Vanize, fronted by Peter Dirkschneider (Udo Dirkschneider’s brother), supported U.D.O. during parts of the tour. During this period, guitarist Jürgen Graf was replaced by Igor Gianola of Gotthard. The tour resulted in the live album “Live from Russia”, released on 15 October 2001.
On 24 July 2002, the album “Man and Machine” was released and received a mixed critical response, though it included notable tracks such as the title track and “Private Eye”. It also featured the duet “Dancing with an Angel” with Doro Pesch. The album “Thunderball” followed on 29 March 2004. “Mission No. X” was released on 30 September 2005 and featured drummer Francesco Jovino.
The album “Mastercutor” was released on 18 May 2007, followed by “Mastercutor Alive” in 2008. “Dominator” was released on 21 August 2009. “Rev-Raptor”, originally scheduled for release in January 2011, was delayed multiple times and ultimately released on 20 May 2011. The live album “Live in Sofia” followed in 2012.
In 2012, Stefan Kaufmann left the band due to health reasons, although he remained involved in production work. In 2013, guitarist Andrey Smirnov joined the band. Igor Gianola also left the group around the same period and was replaced by Kasperi Heikkinen. The album “Steelhammer” was released on 20 May 2013, followed by the live release “Steelhammer – Live from Moscow” in 2014.
Drummer Francesco Jovino left in 2014 and was replaced in 2015 by Sven Dirkschneider. The album “Decadent” was released on 23 January 2015. Later that year, the band released “Navy Metal Night”, a collaboration with the German Navy orchestra Marinemusikkorps Nordsee.
In 2017, Kasperi Heikkinen left the band and was replaced by Bill Hudson, who himself departed in 2018. Stefan Kaufmann temporarily returned for live performances the same year. The album “Steelfactory” was released on 31 August 2018. Shortly afterward, bassist Fitty Wienhold left the band and was replaced by Tilen Hudrap and guitarist Dee Dammers joined the lineup.
During touring in 2019, Udo Dirkschneider continued performing despite knee problems. The band had planned a Wacken Open Air performance featuring Accept’s album “Metal Heart” in full, but this was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the project evolved into the collaborative album “We Are One”, released on 17 July 2020.
The live album “Live in Bulgaria 2020 – Pandemic Survival Show”, recorded on 18 September 2020 in Plovdiv, was released in 2021. The studio album “Game Over” followed on 22 October 2021.
In 2022, bassist Tilen Hudrap was temporarily replaced by former Accept bassist Peter Baltes due to injury, after which Hudrap left the band and Baltes became a permanent member in 2023. The album “Touchdown” was released on 25 August 2023.
In October 2025, guitarist Andrey Smirnov left the band and was replaced by Alen Brentini.
