Airbourne

Airbourne are an Australian hard rock band formed in Warrnambool, Victoria, in late 2001. The founding members were Joel O’Keeffe (lead vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother Ryan O’Keeffe (drums), and David Roads (rhythm guitar and backing vocals). Justin Street (bass guitar and backing vocals) joined in 2004. Roads left the band in 2017 and was replaced by Mathew Harrison in 2018; Harrison was succeeded by Jarrad Morrice in 2022, who was in turn replaced by Brett Tyrrell in 2023.

The band’s debut album, "Runnin’ Wild" (2007), reached the top 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart and also appeared on the United Kingdom Albums Chart and the United States Billboard 200; it was later certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry. Their second album, "No Guts. No Glory." (2010), reached the top 20 in Australia, the top 40 in the United Kingdom, the top five in Germany, and also appeared on the Billboard 200. Their third album, "Black Dog Barking" (2013), also reached the top five in Germany. Airbourne were formed under the name Airborne by Joel and Ryan O’Keeffe, who began playing music at a young age. Early performances featured bassist Luke McKenzie before David Roads joined after meeting Joel O’Keeffe at their workplace. The band recorded two tracks, "Rock ’n’ Roll" and "Give It All You’ve Got", for the compilation album "Hard Wired: Youth Compilation Album" (2002), which was distributed locally.

In 2003 Adam Jacobson joined as bassist, and the group gained attention after winning the Push-On band competition in Melbourne. Their early style was influenced by Australian rock acts such as AC/DC, the Angels, Billy Thorpe, and Rose Tattoo. In 2004 they released the extended play "Ready to Rock", an independent recording that was primarily sold at live performances. By the time of its release, Justin Street had replaced Jacobson on bass. The band relocated to Melbourne in 2005 and signed a multi-album contract with Capitol Records/EMI Music Australia later that year.

Airbourne recorded "Runnin’ Wild" in 2006 with producer Bob Marlette. The album was released in Australia in 2007 and supported by the singles "Runnin’ Wild", "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast", and "Diamond in the Rough". Despite being dropped by Capitol Records prior to its release, the album was issued through EMI in Australia and later internationally via Roadrunner Records. It charted in multiple countries and led to touring with artists including Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, the Rolling Stones, Kid Rock, and Korn. A live extended play, "Live at the Playroom", was released in 2007. "Runnin’ Wild" received nominations at the ARIA Music Awards for Best Rock Album and Breakthrough Artist – Album.

The band began work on their second album, "No Guts. No Glory.", in 2009. Produced by Johnny K, it was released in 2010 and achieved chart success in several countries, including a top five position in Germany. The album included singles such as "No Way But the Hard Way" and "Born to Kill". It was nominated for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at the ARIA Music Awards, and the band supported Iron Maiden on part of their Final Frontier World Tour in 2011.

Work on the third album, "Black Dog Barking", began in 2011. Produced by Brian Howes, it was released in 2013 and reached the top five in Germany and the top 20 in several other countries. The album received generally favourable reviews and was nominated for another ARIA Award in the hard rock or heavy metal category. Airbourne toured extensively in support of the release.

In 2016 the band released "Breakin’ Outta Hell", produced by Bob Marlette. The album achieved some of their highest chart positions internationally, including top 10 placements in several European countries. It was nominated for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at the 2017 ARIA Music Awards. In 2017 David Roads departed from the band and was replaced by Mathew Harrison. That same year, Airbourne released the compilation "Diamond Cuts: The B-Sides", along with a box set titled "Diamond Cuts".

Airbourne recorded their fifth studio album, "Boneshaker", in 2019 with producer Dave Cobb in Nashville. The album reached the top 10 in Germany and Switzerland and the top 20 in Australia and Austria. Following its release, the band continued touring. Harrison was replaced by Jarrad Morrice in 2022, who was later replaced by Brett Tyrrell in 2023.

In 2025 Airbourne released the single "Gutsy" through Spinefarm Records.
