Nile
There are multiple artists with this name:
1) Nile is an American technical death metal band from Greenville, South Carolina, formed in 1993. The current lineup consists of founding guitarist and vocalist Karl Sanders, drummer George Kollias, guitarists and vocalists Brian Kingsland and Zach Jeter, and bassist and vocalist Adam Roethlisberger. Nile is known for their lyrical and musical themes inspired by Egyptology, ancient Middle Eastern cultures, and works of H. P. Lovecraft. The band has released ten studio albums, two compilations, three extended plays, two demos, three singles, and five music videos, with their latest album, "The Underworld Awaits Us All", released on August 23, 2024, through Napalm Records.
Nile formed out of Sanders’ previous band Morriah. Their name is derived from the Nile River. Early releases include a self-titled demo (1994) and the EPs "Festivals of Atonement" (1995) and "Ramses Bringer of War" (1997). Their first full-length album, "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka", was released through Relapse Records after an initial label went out of business, allowing the band to tour with acts such as Incantation and Morbid Angel.
In 2000, the band released "Black Seeds of Vengeance", followed by "In Their Darkened Shrines" (2002) and "Annihilation of the Wicked" (2005). Greek drummer George Kollias joined the band prior to recording "Annihilation of the Wicked". Nile signed with Nuclear Blast in 2006 and released "Ithyphallic" (2007), their first album with the label, which reached No. 162 on the Billboard 200. Subsequent albums included "Those Whom the Gods Detest" (2009), "At the Gate of Sethu" (2012), "What Should Not Be Unearthed" (2015), "Vile Nilotic Rites" (2019), and "The Underworld Awaits Us All" (2024).
Nile has toured extensively, including headlining tours in the US and Europe, co-headlining a US tour with Six Feet Under in 2025, and performing at Maryland Deathfest. The band has experienced numerous lineup changes throughout their history, with Sanders remaining the primary songwriter and creative force.
Musically, Nile combines traditional and technical death metal, featuring complex and fast riffing typical of technical death metal, often tuned to dropped A. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Egyptology, ancient Near Eastern history, religion, and art, with detailed sleeve notes provided on most albums explaining the inspiration for each song. Sanders has described the band’s approach as combining Eastern tonalities with a metal framework, likening it to scoring a cinematic depiction of Ancient Egypt rather than strictly reproducing historical music. Nile has influenced bands including Kittie and Suicide Silence.
