We Came As Romans

We Came as Romans (often abbreviated as WCAR) are an American metalcore band from Troy, Michigan. The band was formed in 2005 and has undergone several line-up changes. They signed with Equal Vision Records in 2009 and later moved to SharpTone Records in 2016. We Came as Romans have released seven studio albums: "To Plant a Seed" (2009), "Understanding What We've Grown to Be" (2011), "Tracing Back Roots" (2013), "We Came as Romans" (2015), "Cold Like War" (2017), "Darkbloom" (2022), and "All Is Beautiful... Because We're Doomed" (2025), as well as two EPs released in 2008, "Demonstrations" and "Dreams".

The band was formed in August 2005 by high school classmates Sean Zelda, Dave Stephens, Jonny Nabors, Mark Myatt and Joshua Moore under the name This Emergency. In their early period Stephens performed guitar, keyboards and backing vocals. The group performed locally in the Detroit metropolitan area. Nabors left the band in November 2005 and was replaced by Sean Daly. Zelda left in June 2006 to pursue studies at the University of Michigan. Later that year vocalist Larry Clark joined, and the band adopted the name We Came as Romans. After Clark departed in late 2007, Chris Moore became the band’s vocalist and subsequently took on most lyric-writing duties.

The band released their first EP, "Demonstrations", which was distributed at concerts and through their website. Moore left in 2008 and was replaced by vocalist Kyle Pavone. In June of that year the band toured with Close to Home, and later released their second EP, "Dreams", on December 2, 2008. The EP was produced by Joey Sturgis and received favourable reviews.

We Came as Romans released their debut studio album "To Plant a Seed" on November 3, 2009. Produced by Joey Sturgis, the album included re-recorded versions of the songs "Dreams" and "Intentions" from the "Dreams" EP. The band toured extensively following the album’s release and issued a music video for the title track "To Plant a Seed" in May 2010. They also contributed a cover of Justin Timberlake’s "My Love" to the compilation album "Punk Goes Pop Volume 03". Later in 2010 the single "To Move On Is to Grow" was released, and the album was subsequently reissued in a deluxe edition that included a DVD featuring interviews, live performances and additional material.

Recording sessions for the band’s second studio album took place in early and mid-2011 with producer Joey Sturgis. The album "Understanding What We've Grown to Be" was released on September 13, 2011 in North America. Its singles included "Mis//Understanding", "Understanding What We've Grown to Be", and "What I Wished I Never Had". The album presented a darker tone than the band’s previous material while maintaining themes of personal growth and unity. It charted on several Billboard charts and was released in Europe through Nuclear Blast. Music videos were produced for "Mis//Understanding", "Just Keep Breathing", and "Understanding What We've Grown to Be". The band toured extensively during 2011 and 2012 in support of the album, including appearances on the Vans Warped Tour and international tours in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

During this period the band also released additional songs including "Fair-Weather", "Let These Words Last Forever", "Hope", and "The King of Silence", which appeared on compilations and deluxe reissues of "Understanding What We've Grown to Be". They also recorded a cover of "Glad You Came" by The Wanted for the compilation album "Punk Goes Pop Volume 5".

The band began recording their third studio album in March 2013 with producer John Feldmann. The album, titled "Tracing Back Roots", was released on July 23, 2013. Singles included "Tracing Back Roots", "Fade Away", and "I Survive", the latter featuring Aaron Gillespie of Underoath. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 and reached number one on the Hard Rock Albums and Independent Albums charts. Additional music videos were released for songs including "Fade Away", "Never Let Me Go" and "Ghosts".

In May 2015 the band announced their fourth studio album, "We Came as Romans", which was released on July 24, 2015. The album included singles such as "The World I Used to Know" and "Regenerate". Around this time several members formed a side project called Crucible, which released the EP "The Trials" in 2015. In 2016 the band released the single "Wasted Age". That year drummer Eric Choi announced his departure from the band after approximately ten years.

In 2017 the band began working with drummer David Puckett as a touring member. Their fifth studio album, "Cold Like War", was released on October 20, 2017. It was the band’s first release through SharpTone Records and their first without Choi.

On August 25, 2018, vocalist and keyboardist Kyle Pavone died at the age of 28 from an accidental drug overdose. Following his death the band announced that they would not replace him and would continue as a group in tribute to his legacy. A foundation was established in his honour.

In 2019 the band toured with Crown the Empire, Erra and SHVPES and began recording new material. Later that year they released the standalone singles "Carry the Weight" and "From the First Note". In July 2021 the band issued the single "Darkbloom", followed by "Black Hole" featuring Caleb Shomo of Beartooth and "Daggers" featuring Zero 9:36. Their sixth studio album, "Darkbloom", was released on October 14, 2022 and included the singles "Darkbloom", "Plagued", "Black Hole", "Daggers", and "Golden".

In 2025 the band began releasing new material for their seventh studio album. The singles "Bad Luck", "No Rest For the Dreamer", and "Culture Wound" preceded the release of the album "All Is Beautiful... Because We're Doomed", which was issued on August 22, 2025. In August 2025 the band were announced as part of the line-up for the Hellfest festival scheduled to take place in Clisson, France in June 2026.
